like it but had some problems

The lantern looks great, exactly what I was looking for. It seems well-made, it is heavy and sturdy and the solar panels on top are unobtrusive. It's really nice looking.
However.........It didn't work when I first got it. Kind of a draw-back. I contacted the company and they said they would send me new batteries and told me to try new batteries in it in the mean time.
Regular AA batteries did work, but I thought it had come with rechargeable batteries (although this was un-clear). I did receive 2 batteries in the mail. They were mismatched. One was solid yellow with no printing on it and the other looked like a regular battery. (It is my understanding that you should not mix different types of batteries). I put them in. It did not work. The solid yellow battery looks like a re-chargeable batter, but I don't know if it is or not. Just annoying.
Regular AAs work, but run out fairly quickly. My main complaint is that I just would have liked more information!

If it's solar, why do you need to switch it off and on? A:You have to switch it on and off. That is only if you do not want to use it. It is battery powered.

Does this lantern turn off automatically during daylight? A:The SLST Solar Portable Lantern does have a "night eye" which does shut the light off during daylight. It also has a manual "on/off" switch so you can operate it as desired. Ric
